2004 Press Feature...
Teacher turned interior designer Susan Collins has just put the finishing touches to a high profile house conversion which she hopes will put her company, Angel Host, well and truly on the map. A chance meeting with music promoter and lead singer with band Sweet Sensation, Ricardo Patrick, proved to be the launch pad for Susan Collins’ new venture.
As part of the contract to fully refurbish the house, she was commissioned create a highly contemporary feel at the singer’s Cheshire home incorporating a number of unusual features such as a glass floor in the bathroom.
The former deputy head teacher at Bury Grammar School (Girls) Junior School, had decided to mark the new millennium with a career change and retrained to work in the wine trade. After being made redundant just before Christmas 12 months ago, Susan Collins was accepted onto a new entrepreneur scholarship at Manchester Metropolitan University’s business school where she developed her interior design business. Since then she has thrown all her energy into giving the Cheshire house a major new look.
She explains: “Light and space are the main themes of the redesign using materials to create a neutral palette including wood, steel, leather, marble and glass walls have been knocked down to create a large living, dining and kitchen area with a glass wall erected to separate this area from the hallway. The contemporary design is particularly evident in the kitchen where stainless steel units are complemented by glass splash backs and polished limestone work surface. An unusual design feature is the use of CDs behind the splash back to reflect the profession of the owner of the property.”
The glass floor in the main bathroom has been underlit with fibre optic lighting and all the windows in the house light up at night to give the property a unique appearance. Lots of stainless steel and mirrors have been put to good use in the bedroom to echo the sleek, contemporary style throughout the 2 bedroomed home. Susan Collins hopes she may have found a niche in the interior design market.
